My wife and I had cause to spend a week in the labour ward (ward 3) at Dr. Greys. My wife started to have strong contractions in the early hours of sunday morning and we travelled the short (10 mile) distance to the ward.
Labour took longer than expected, but the midwives were terrific, by lunchtime the following day our daughter was born. We were all set to leave the following day when things started to happen. Which is to say our daughter turned yellow with jaundice and spent the evening in an incubator with a light box.
Being a man I was not permitted to stay in the ward over night. I had to go home, but returned the next morning. Again the midwives were simply amazing and within a couple of days we thought we were ready to go home.
But then the swabs came back from the labs, she (and my wife) had tested positive for Strep B. This is an infection that 25% of the popuation carry naturally (not a healthcare associated infection).
In all we spent a week in ward 3 before we finally got to go home as a familiy. Throughout we were treated with sympathy and respect by the midwives and I am so greatful to all of them for their work.
