About: Cumberland Infirmary / Accident and emergency

My son was admitted to A & E January 2017 with sever pain on his right side. His gp had sent from the surgery with suspected apendix problems. He was left on A & E for 13 hours with minimum pain killers which his girlfriend had to keep requesting from nurses. After 13hrs with no scan, no antibiotics and a lack of care from staff he was whizzed up to a ward antibiotics administrated and ten minutes later in theatre were it was found his apendix had perforated

He spent the next six days and nights very poorly under the outreach team.

The lack of communication with him and ourselves from nurses and doctors was completely unexcepable and a disgrace to the hospital

Eventually after many days and nights of peaking temperatures he had a 12 hr break from the fevers but was still very poorly he and ourselves asked time and time again if he could have some kind of scan as we felt he was still very poorly but we was told it was not needed and to our dismay the decision was made to discharge him. Three days later after he was very very poorly at home with peaking temperatures again the gp thought he should be seen again by the hospital he has been admitted back into hospital and this time given a CT scan only to find he has a large collection of puss and fluid near the apendix area which has probebly been there since the start he is now waiting the doctors decision . on how to remove the fluid ( maybe further surgery )

I haven't mentioned yet he is a man of 22 who works 15hrs a day every day and never has any health problems he doesn't drink or smoke so his fitness levels are very good but if you was to see him now after the terrible unprofessional treatment he has received at the hands of this hospital!!

I am now in the process of contacting pals to try and make some sense of the traumatic time my son and our family have been through in the past ten days and of which is continueing

Dear Susan,

I am very sorry your son is still experiencing such discomfort and pain. The events that you describe are not our usual standard and I can understand how distressing this is for you all.

If you are unhappy with the care or treatment that your son is receiving, you have the right to complain.

I do hope that you managed to contact our PALS team yesterday and that they have been able to help you, or put you in touch with senior staff members who may be able to discuss your concerns with you.

There are several contact options for PALS

• 01228 814008 between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday,

• e-mail to PALSCIC@ncuh.nhs.uk

• visit Patient Advice & Liaison Service, located in the main atrium (opposite x-ray)

In the meantime I will share your comments with the Matrons responsible for A&E and Surgery.

Please accept my sincere apologies at this stressful time.
