"Great experience overall!"

About: St Thomas' Hospital / Maternity care

I have been to St Thomas' many times since 2013 for multiple pregnancies including 2 miscarriages - my son was born here in May 2016 and I have had a great experience with a few hiccups but was above expectations overall. 1) Early pregnancy unit: always very supportive and helpful especially with multiple scans and tests. Long waiting times on weekdays but that was expected. 2) Antenatal care: excellent care and had amazing support throughout my stressful pregnancies with multiple scans including MRIs and emergency trips for unexplained bleeding (ectropion diagnosed thankfully). One of the sonographers was a bit off once but I had so many positive experiences, can give it a pass. My baby was breech and all options were discussed thoroughly. Never had phone issues - must be a new thing because I called them many many times. 3) Delivery and labour ward: no complications after elective c-section and though was all set to book private room after hearing some bad things about general ward, I had a very comfortable experience overall. Very clean room/bathroom and very helpful midwives especially when it came to breastfeeding support. Did not think BF would be so hard. Only thing was that my son developed jaundice on day 3 and had lost a lot of weight by day 5 when weighed at home (had to be readmitted for this) but he was not weighed again in hospi after birth (guess it is policy) and we were there for 4 days. The midwives were very pro breastfeeding but we were obviously having a latching issue. Wish they had suggested formula supplementation while BF was being sorted but formula was made out to be this really bad thing rather than presented as a valid option. Again, guessing it is a policy thing. We had to give formula anyway when we were readmitted to local hospi. Anyway, my son gained weight well later and was not dehydrated or anything. So - thanks all at St Thomas' for your support and help !!
