"MSK clinic"

I ,too, would echo the negative comments posted on this site concerning the service at the MSK clinic and am left wondering what is the purpose of the clinic. If it is simply to order a scan then surely a GP should be given that authority which would save the money this clinic is costing the taxpayer.

A Gp being a doctor rather than just a physio would surely be more qualified to assess whether such a test is the right decision. I got the impression from the physio that if I did more exercise the problem would resolve.

this is not the case as I informed them that I do the exercises given to me by WSM hospital and I am not an inactive person.

I felt that there was little interest in getting to the root of the problem and if the MRI did not reveal the underlying cause I would simply be referred to a pain clinic.

My problem is one of considerable timespan and in view of that I wouold have expected to see a consultant.

this does indeed just seem to be deferring tactics and wasting NHS money.

Furthermore I found the attitude of the person I spoke to on the telephone very much in line of that of the whole set up-that is one is expecting something one is not entitled to !

Hello

I am sorry that you are not satisfied with the service you received with the MSK clinic you attended.

In the interests of clarity, the reason the MSK service was established was that GP's are General Practitioners in all areas of health and whilst some have specialist interests in areas of medicine, few are muscoskeletal specialists. This had resulted in referrals being sent into orthopaedic consultant services which were inappropriate or unnecessary, wasting a large amount of clinic time and a large amount of NHS funding. The Physios are not 'just' physios but are highly trained and highly skilled clinicians with years of training and practice under their belts and as such, with the agreement of the GP service are best placed to assess you and devise treatment plans and organise appropriate scans if required. It is good practice following an assessment and the decision to scan, to wait for the results to check for the cause to ensure that further treatment is not detrimental to your already painful condition.

I can assure you that this system is not a deferring tactic nor a waste of money, it has actually been shown to save a lot of precious NHS funding and have excellent outcomes for the tens of thousands of patients seen in the North Somerset region every year..

You mention the attitude of the physio and of the person on the phone was not to your liking and I would be keen to look into this and your case as a whole and see if we can improve anything for you.

As you have not left your name, which I completely understand given that it is a public forum, I am unable to access your records to find out which clinician you saw so

I ask that you please contact me directly and confidentially on m.croughan@nhs.net so that I can begin to look into your case.

I will then send this to the Service Manager for the Muscoskeletal services for full investigation and action.

We appreciate your feedback to us even when it is not positive and I hope that you will give us the opportunity to resolve this for you.

Kind regards

Matt Croughan
