"Missed diagnosis"

About: Birmingham Children's Hospital

We have attended a+e with my daughter on 3 different occasions over the course of the last week. She has several respiratory conditions, all 3 times we were told it was a virus and we didn't need to be in hospital. On Tuesday she got very poorly I took her to my GP out of frustration that the children's hospital weren't taking me seriously, they looked at my child and immediately referred me back to the children's on arrival her temp was 39.8 but we were told there was not one bed in the trust. Waited for four hours for a bed on CDU where she was diagnosed with septic tonisilitis not one previous doctor had looked in her throat, Isn't this a basic requirement of an examination?? Because the infection was allowed to take over her body she required IV anti biotics and NG feeding all of which was very traumatic for her. Again on discharge I feel it was rushed because they needed her bed, when at home she is still now unwell. I feel very let down.

Hello,

I am sorry to hear that this was your recent experience in A+E and CDU with your daughter, and can understand your frustration and feeling very let down. I have shared your concerns with the Senior Nurse and Doctor from the Emergency department who I know will also be saddened and disappointed as they would want every patient to recieve the best possible care. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you so that we can see how we can stop it happening again. You can contact us through our PALS department on 0121 333 8403.

I sincerely hope your daughter is now making a good recovery and will soon be feeling much better.

With kind regards,

Janette Vyse, Deputy Head of Nursing
