"Neurosurgery Watd 6B"

About: Southmead Hospital / Neurosurgery

I have just got home from Ward 6B. This ward is wonderful. Modern, clean, light, airy, private, windows that open, tv you don't have to pay for, separate rooms, en suite bathrooms, good food and refreshments. The most important thing is the staff, as always, and this team are amazing! From the surgical team, to the nurses, the physiotherapists, the health care assistants, to the housekeepers, every single person was kind, compassionate, friendly, warm, reassuring. There was mixed sexes but you have a private room and the night staff are always around. All my visitors thought it felt like a private hospital. I did have to wait a while on the buzzer a few times. But these members of staff are very busy and it's not because they aren't trying to get to you. A couple of times the person cleaning touched a gloved hand from something dirty to something clean (ie bin, then bed tray) but I asked for an anti bacterial wipe. I know I am very fussy with germs. And one nurse was a little short and brief with me but the nurse was very busy. A smile would have helped but I understand the nurse is trying to do a stressful job. I almost don't want to mention those things though as I was 99% happy with everything and as I said, the staff were so kind and warm. I'm not allowed to mention names but there were two nurses in particular who made my stay almost enjoyable! (And a laminectomy is not enjoyable!) so to the nurse who is going to use a white noise app and the nurse who is from watercress land- thank you thank you thank you!!!! I so appreciate you and all the hard work you do. I think you're all amazing!

Dear Anonymous - thank you for your kind comments and observations about your care on Ward 6B. I was pleased to hear that your experience was almost exclusively very positive for yourself and for your visitors.

To clarify as the wards contain private rooms they are classed as single sex accommodation; mixed wards are avoided across the NHS and need to be reported on as part of monitoring standards. I hope that you found the level of privacy the single rooms afforded was acceptable and I am sorry if the overall design led to small delays in staff responding to the call bells and I thank you for your understanding about any wait you experienced. I do acknowledge that any delay can be frustrating.

I am grateful for your helpful comments about the cleaning standards. We take infection control very seriously and so I have shared your observations with the facilities team to ensure we can learn lessons from your comments as part of our continuous desire to improve and deliver optimal care. Please accept my apologies if the cleaners actions made anxious in any way.

Your comments have also been fed back to the staff on ward 6B so they can be aware of your positive feedback and thanks.

Kind Regards - Steve Sykes
