"Death of Michael Bashford."

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital / Accident and emergency

I feel the review options are not appropriate in this case.

My wife's Brother was taken to A&E by car yesterday 12th Jan. Arriving late AM.

He died at 9pm that evening of Necrotising Fascilitis.

Given the complexity and rarity of his condition the Staff were magnificent. It took time to get the diagnosis and then the task, that fell to a wonderful doctor, of telling the family, firstly background to his illness and condition, and then the Fact that he was going to die that evening or overnight. Hope Gone!

The doctor was caring, empathetic and emotional. The doctor carried out their tasks with grace. Nurses also were a great credit to your hospital.

They really cared, one young nurse actually got tea and coffee for the family!

All of this, our experience, was made 'softer' by their extraordinary professionalism.

How are they able to maintain this standard in such a war zone like environment?

It appeared to me as chaos, but was obviously not that to the staff.

There is a downside, which is really the point of my writing, and that is the toilets!

Stress leads to an increased need for toilets and yet, my Wife, Mike's sister, found the nearest toilets blocked and without toilet paper!

If restaurants and supermarkets can manage a regular service of maintenance and cleaning then surely a critical care department of a major hospital should be beyond reproach.

I hope my comments will give recognition to the medical staff and result in a major improvement in hygiene.

Dear Mr Warren

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Thank you for taking the time to share your kind comments regarding your recent experience you had in A&E. I have shared your email with the department. Such positive praise is always well received and much appreciated.

I am sorry about the housekeeping concerns and have raised this with the facilities department, as I fully agree with the points that you have raised

With kind regards and best wishes to you

Caroline Davies

Deputy Chief Nurse
