"Excellent treatment at Ormskirk eye clinic"

About: Ormskirk & District General Hospital Ormskirk & District General Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I have just had my second cataract operation at Ormskirk Hospital and I cannot praise the staff enough! All my early anxieties were unfounded; from the day of the unhurried and reassuring pre "op" appointment to the day of the operation itself.

I had my first cataract done privately (big mistake) and have to say that Ormskirk was a smoother and much more comfortable experience. One of the two kind anaesthetists summed it up for me when he said that having your sight improved should be a happy occasion rather than an anxiety provoking one.

I myself work in the NHS and I felt that the success of Ormskirk Opthamology, was related to its strong sense of team work. From entering the cheerful waiting room, to later with Jean, the nurse who held my hand throughout the operation itself, through to Sheilah, the nurse who checked me carefully afterwards and even waited outside with me till the taxi arrived to take me home, all showed compassion and very thorough nursing care as well as the hoped for high level of skill.

One could also sense that there is a culture of treating patients as individuals which is remarkable in view of the high turnover in very routine procedures. I agreed with a fellow patient when he said that he hadn't expected the removal of his cataract to be so enjoyable! To anyone fearing an operation on their eyes at Ormskirk I would say, "Relax." This is the NHS at its very best!
