"still waiting...waste of hope, time and money!"

About: Fairfield General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

me and my mum visited ward 9 for my mum to have a complete hip replacement. Everything was set and put in place for her appointment, she had a bed and we arrived for her operation to go ahead. We arrived at 7am as required and went through all the necessary bumf and questions that have to be asked (even tho it was mainly repeating what had been asked at the pre-op assessment). My mum was seen by the surgeon and their registrar as all other patients as they were making their way round everyone also on the ward. My mum was told she would be 3rd on the list to be operated on which would be around 1-2 o'clock. Then the surgeon said she would now be last on the list which would be around 3 o'clock or soon after. We had no idea why this had changed. I understand that plans and operation lists can change but we had no explanation. As more and more people on the ward kept being taken down to be operated on and returning me and mum were sat left in the dark as to what was happening and was under the impression she should be next. There was a patient that was next to us on the ward who the nurses and surgeon said she would be 4th (which meant she would be after my mum or so we thought) who went down before my mum and she was surprised to be going down before my mum after they had got chatting. So we was kept waiting confused. My mum had to kept asking the nurses for more information as to when and what was going on, which they also didn't know. My mum who needs a hip and also 2 knees replacements and suffers with arthritis which causes her extreme pain was left in her bed without pain killers for over 10 hours. At this point it was way past the time that my mum should have gone down (about 2 hours). Other patients began to ask are you still waiting this is getting ridiculous! My mum never saw the anesthetist either! Around half 5 which was over 10 hour later from when we arrived we was told that the surgeon has cancelled my mums operation and wasn't doing it! To say we was annoyed is an understatement, absolutely fuming! Cancelled due to there "being a delay in the morning due to some equipment" what ever that means! if these operations are being carried as regular as i think the equipment should be fully working and ready to be used straight away! Also if they were aware of the delay and the affect on patients within the que for operation that day, then they should have communicated with the nurses to let the patients know. Instead of having patients sitting waiting all day, with hope and in excruciating amounts of pain. If communicated then patients could have been told it was cancelled earlier on in the day and allowed to go home instead of enduring pain, not eating or drinking all day. This is just a massive pain and now my mums operation has to be rescheduled for god knows when! other than all this ward 9 was lovely, calm, with lovely nurses and staff and exceptionally clean and well catered for. Will be very sceptical when she gets her next apointment
