"Patient Care and Service"

About: Sandwell General Hospital / Accident and emergency Sandwell General Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

There is a lot of negative press about the NHS these days which makes me apprehensive about the service, so I thought I would take a moment to share a recent experience. I consider myself to be fortunate, in that I have enjoyed good health and try to look after myself...so I've never been a regular user of the NHS service. Unfortunately, no matter how well you look after yourself, nature is a dominant force.

One day this week I suffered severe abdominal pains through the night. It wasn't pleasant but I'll spare the details.

I could hardly walk but managed to get to A&E at Sandwell and waited for three hours. I was on the verge of passing out through pain but persevered and pleased that I did because what followed made it all worth the wait...if that makes sense.

To cut a long story short I had a very painful appendix which had to be removed. I went from A&E to SAU and then to Lyndon 2. I was there for 2 days in total and it was a successful operation.

I cant remember the names of all the staff that were involved but they all played their part to the highest standard in making the team operate as smoothly and professionally as it did. I was very well looked after by both the day and night shift. Forgive me but I cant recall all the names of every member of staff involved. From the doctor at A&E, to all the staff at SAU and Lyndon 2, the consultants, surgeons, anesthetists, porters and not forgetting the catering service....thank you all...

Thank you for taking the time to write about your positive experience at our Trust. We aim to offer the best standard of care possible. I will pass on your comments to the departments involved in your care. Kind regards Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
