"My experience"

About: Princess Anne Hospital / Maternity care

I had a few complications during pregnancy, I had to visit epu and staff there were very nice and reassuring. During the third trimester I had to make quite a few trips to the day unit, again the staff there were fantastic and I was not made to feel silly for coming in most days, I was reassured and told if I had any concerns to come back in even if I had to come in every day. Every visit the staff were amazing, explained in a way I could understand not the medical language that no one understands. Due to the complications I had to be induced early, which after about 33 hours I ended up having an emergency c section. From the induction room to the recovery room the staff gave 100 per cent quality care, all the staff were fantastic, when I panicked in the labour ward and in theatre the staff were incredible and instantly calmed me. Most of all my baby was delivered safely and I had a healthy baby girl. I was then moved upstairs to the burley ward. I would say for the first 24 hrs the staff were again were amazing and gave 100 per cent quality care to my baby and myself. However the second night there the staff changed over. I found myself using the buzzer abit more, one of the midwifes that night was very good, however when I asked of pain relief I was told I couldn't have any as I had some previously, which I knew was incorrect, I then asked again in the early hours of the morning again I was told I couldn't have any. I told this particular midwife I haven't had any pain relief since the night before, they told me I had an hour ago and then left, by the time my partner came in I was in agony and in tears, the midwife then came back and told me I would be going home, I did not feel ready and wanted to get pain under control. I found this midwife to be very rude, unhelpful, and actually made me feel like I was already a bad mum and didn't know how to look after my baby. This one midwife ruined the whole experience. Up until then the experience was amazing which was all down to the fantastic and wonderful staff. My daughter is now 10 weeks old and is just absolutely perfect.

Congratulation on the birth of your daughter.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us - your feedback has been shared with the matron for women and newborn to review and share with the teams.

I am so sorry that you ante-natal positive experience was later marred by the care you received on one night postnatally. I am sorry that the midwife was not able to address your concerns satisfactorily and this left you feeling like a 'bad mum'.

If you would like to discuss your experience further please contact Birth Afterthoughts on 023 8120 6834.
