"Frustrating and unhelpful"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital / Urology

I was admitted to hospital with horrific pain in my kidneys. I was told on that day that it was a kidney stone. The next day i was told it was calcification, then E-coli. After 5 days they decided it was a kidney stone and i needed a stent. I saw different doctor most days, and they seemed to give you 2 mins of their time before leaving you, I did not feel involved in any of what went on, as it was as if was being discussed instead of being involved in the discussion. I was told by the surgeon that the stent will be removed in 4-6 weeks, if i haven't heard anything after 4 weeks to chase them and get booked in. Easier said than done. I have constantly tried to call both the switchboard, urology and a number that was given to me for the medical secretary. the medical secretary is never available and voicemail always on. the switchboard operator is always rude and unhelpful, and the others i speak to on the phone haven't got a clue how to help.

The switchboard operator told me that i shouldn't be calling to chase this (even though the surgeon told me to!) they then told me that calling at 9.15am was unreasonable as i shouldn't expect the medical secretary to be in (although even when I called at 10.30am they still are not in- is 10.30am an early start or something? ). Then i was told that after my pre op it usually is up to 3 months! Very concerning when the surgeon told me up to 6 weeks! I have had nothing but problems since my stent was inserted, I have had UTI's since the day it was inserted and other issues. On a Monday i get put on one set of antibiotics, then by Thursday i get called up and told to stop taking them and get some others. This is really frustrating and extremely expensive. Then to be told im meant to put up with this for 3 months! I am beyond dissatisfied with the service and communication i've received since i've left hospital. The nurses whilst I was in hospital were lovely and very caring, but it seems the rest of the staff let them down. Its a shame that Urology is at Shrewsbury as i was first admitted to Telford and every member of staff from the nurses to receptionists were helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and concerns with us. I am sorry to see that the care you have received from the Urology Service is not as you would have expected and that you had not found a resolution when you wrote your feedback.

I have passed your comments to the Lead Clinician, Operational Manager and Matrons for Urology and asked them to consider these. This service is, however, anonymous, so if you would like further assistance in your particular case, please do not hesitate to contact my colleagues in the Patient Advice and Liaison Office (PALS), who will be happy to assist you. You can contact them on 01743 261691.

Although you have been dissatisfied with the care overall, I am pleased to note your comments on our nursing staff as well as the team at the Princess Royal. I will ask the matrons to share this with the teams.

Thank you again for sharing your comments and please do not hesitate to contact the PALS office who are available to assist you from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

With all Best Wishes,

Patient Experience Team
