"Poor communication in Gastro at Hairmyres"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Endoscopy University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical/Gastroenterology (Ward 11)

(as a relative),

After reading some of the patient opinion stories I came across a very similar story and thought I would highlight that the patient story is not a one off. My partner has been really let down by gastroenterology, he has had appointments cancelled- one of them only cancelled 1 hour before the appointment! He was refused results of a scan, eventually Mr. Brown had to intervene and give him these results to which we are very grateful as he had taken time out of his busy schedule when he did not have to. He was told his consultant had retired only to find at his last appointment his consultant there- the same one that numerous appointments had been cancelled for due to retirement. At this last appointment he had asked to specifically to see one consultant and after waiting over an hour we asked what was going on only to be told he had been moved onto his "retired" consultants list without being asked if he was happy with this. My partner refused to see them as he had been mucked around so much previously and was therefore bumped to the "back to the queue" of the consultants list he had requested. All in all we waited nearly 3 hours for a scheduled appointment due to the terrible communication in Gastro.

Credit has to be given to the CSW on that day as she was extremely apologetic.

The gastro unit's communication needs much improvement and I do hope this has or will be addressed.

Dear Lintel,

I am so sorry for the upset caused to you and your partner when trying to access our Gastro services.

In order to review your partner's case I need some personal details. Can I ask you or your partner to get in touch with me on 01355 584664 so that I can review the files and explore with the appropriate departments what has gone wrong and how we can improve this for you and other patients who access our services.

I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience.

Kind Regards

Gwen

Dear Lintel,

Thank you for getting in touch with me on the phone last week. I appreciated the opportunity to explore your poor experience with regards to the breakdown in communication within our Gastro service.

I want to again apologise for the delay to your results and I realise that this was a difficult time for you given the implications of possible diagnoses. I have shared the communication issues with the site team to avoid future problems for yourself or any other patients.

I was grateful to hear of the help you had from Moira and her colleague, I’ve passed this on to Moira after we spoke and she remembered your conversations and was pleased you found her of assistance.

I hope you are keeping well,

Kind Regards

Gwen
