"The midwives were beyond brilliant ..."

About: St Mary's Hospital (Manchester)

(as the patient),

What I liked

The midwives were beyond brilliant in the delivery suite. I was having my baby who has severe medical complications so it was an induction. They made what could easily have been a dreadful labour into a really positive experience even saying I could have my son delivered onto my tummy. This is great because he would need immediate help with his heart upon delivery. That minute that I got with my son was precious as he was then rushed straight to Special Care.

The Midwives all treated me with dignity and made me feel like I was the only person in the world.

Special Care nurses are amazing. They have a tremendously difficult job to do but they managed to keep my son alive for his transfer to have surgery even though he had been given 24 hours to live at one point.

I'm so grateful I got to deliver in St Marys and would recommend this hospital for any lady and her baby.

What could be improved

The wards for post delivery are horrendous. The Midwives put me in a room with ladies who had their babies with them. It was'nt until I broke down and started crying that I got moved into my own room. They are very short staffed and getting help with anything was really difficult.

Getting discharged to follow my son to his surgical hospital took 4 hours. Sending your newborn off for open heart surgery is difficult enough but being unable to follow because of bureaucratic nonsense made me furious.

Anything else?

I still would recommend this hospital but the post delivery wards need an overview. The Midwives on these wards should try empathising with ladies who don't have a healthy baby.

P.S. The epidural was amazing- no pain but could still feel the sensation of the contraction. The best!!
