"The accident and emergency area, ..."

About: Bristol Royal Infirmary

(as the patient),

What I liked

The accident and emergency area, and all wards I have been admitted to were exceptionally clean.

What could be improved

I have been admitted to the BRI numerous times in the past as I used to self harm. However due to me requiring both emergency and ongoing treatments for my self inflicted wounds, I do not feel I was treated well. I was told by a nurse in accident and emergency that i was a very stupid person, and that I should not be wasting medical staff time. I feel I must express that I only ever visited A&E out of absolute necessity, i.e I once needed a 3 unit blood transfusion, and 72 stitches. I haven't ever abused the NHS, and dont feel this doctors and nurses had any right to judge me. I feel I was treated as a second class patient.

We apologise for any distress you were caused. We have passed on your feedback to the A&E department but would be very grateful if you could get in touch with us to provide more information about the events described so that we can properly investigate and respond to them. You can do this either via the Patient Support & Complaints Team (0117 342 3604) or directly with the Matron for A&E, Bernadette Greenan (0117 342 2334 / bernadette.greenan@uhbristol.nhs.uk).
