"I was made to feel welcome and ..."

About: Churchill Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was made to feel welcome and important. Everyone was kind, caring and nothing was too much trouble. Even when at end of their shifts and visibly tired, there was always a kind word and a smile. Long time since I have been in a hospital and so much has changed. The bed was so comfortable it was better than mine at home. The food I very much enjoyed. Look and smell put me off a little bit to begin with, but had to eat and well tucked in after tasting. It was really nice. Chicken and mushroom casserole one day, chicken and leek pie another. Compliments to the kitchen staff. Had a nice dayroom with a small garden area outside with bird table. TV/internet by bed (okay expensive but worth it). Could use mobile phones.

What could be improved

Conditions for the nurses could have been improved. The room I was in was okay temperature wide but we had three fans going 24/7. The nurses had nothing and were feeling the heat. Not sure how they managed to keep going all day and it wasn't even one of the hottest days. Their half hour break(s) should be mandatory not just as and when they can fit it in. They are truly Angels and deserve the very best.

Anything else?

I was very pleasantly surprised at my stay, albeit just a few days. I was not expecting such comfort or nice food and I was worried most about lack of dignity but that was never a problem. I cannot praise everyone enough.
