My father was admitted to B2 on Nov 30th having had a stroke which left him with little speech and poor movement on his right hand side. Although there are lots of staff around it is difficult to get any professional to have a proper conversation with you about progress and next steps. Whilst he made some progress over the next 2 days, he was still clearly disorientated and struggling to speak. On December 2nd at around 8pm he was told he was being moved to Tameside Hospital, that he had to move then or they'd lose the bed. It was very clear that the number one priority was clearing the bed and passing dad on to be someone else's problem/statistic. Fortunately his granddaughter was there and was able to try to explain to him what was happening as he was very confused and distressed. It was nearly 10pm before he was moved. Nobody contacted either of the 2 people who were named in his notes as his next of kin. This was a disgraceful way to treat a 90 year old man and we have no doubt that it has set back his recovery. It would be better to lose the bed at Tameside than move him in the middle of the night when no family member could accompany him. We phoned the ward he had been moved to at Tameside and they appeared to have not received any notes about him or any of his contact details. The family is appalled by this service. I am reminded of a comment in the Francis Inquiry about 'hitting the target but missing the point' - it was very clear that this unit was putting targets above the compassionate care of its patients.
"Target driven and lacking compassion"
