"Awful"

About: William Harvey Hospital / Maternity

Delivery suite told me to start pushing when I was still 9cms. They then identified after an hour and a half that I was actually still 9cms and my baby was slightly back to back. After the doctor pulled the cervix over my baby's head I was told to start pushing again which i did for another 2 hours before they decided I needed assistance. I was in agony as they stopped my epidural so I could focus on my contractions which were excruciating. As I was pushing for so long, I'd pushed him too far down so a C-Section was not an option. They took me to theatre to attempt and fail at delivering him via ventouse and then finally forceps were used which assisted me with pushing him out. During this time I had begged and screamed for pain relief. They had attempted a spinal block 6-8 times all of which failed, so they resorted to another epidural which finally gave me some relief. Due to the failed attempts of a spinal block, I suffered a Dural Puncture, which wasn't identified for about 3 days until the brilliant nurses on the Folkestone Ward took ownership of my case. Due to the effects of the puncture, I was unable to care for my baby for days and missed out on vital bonding time. I finally had a blood patch to stop the leak in the spinal fluid, however was unable to feel if it had worked as I was given a 100ml dose of tramadol instead of 50ml, so I had to wait until I slept that off before I could feel the relief. I was told on the day of discharge that the headache could return at anytime and I may need another blood patch if that's the case, so now every time I get a headache I panic that it's returning. After the blood patch they said "you can go home in the morning if the procedure worked". I got up and ready in the morning and discharged myself at 4.35pm after seeing 3-4 nurses, an anaesthetist and a doctor, all of who failed to take my cannula out that had been in for 5 days (despite my request as it was hurting) and they kept assuring me it would be taken out when I was discharged - which was meant to happen in the AM. I've rated cleanliness poorly for the ward as I visited the toilet numerous times and was greeted by the same 2 urine samples from other women that had started evaporating by my last toilet trip. The majority of staff on the Folkestone Ward really were amazing and they are the only reason I am home today, as the doctor kept dismissing my headache as "low blood count", despite the Nurses confirming my blood count was on the up after 4 blood transfusions.
