"Poor inconsiderate care"

About: Salford Royal / Trauma and orthopaedics

This was experienced by my wife during her hospital stay at Salford Royal between Sat 8th October and Friday 14th October 2016.

Whilst a good deal of my wife's stay was positive, their were aspects of her care severely lacking.

Poor Pain Management

My wife was given morphine for her pain in the first few days of her stay.

This was totally ineffective and doing no more than making her feel sick. The answer was to give her anti-sickness meds. At no point did anyone actively manage her pain and look to change the medication because it was so ineffective, just making her feel sick all the time. In the end she got more pain relief from soluble paractemol.

Rough Handling Sunday 11th October 2016

My wife was in considerable pain due to her fractured right knee and this was made worse by the rough handling of a couple of nursing staff and the porter when taking my wife for a CT Scan.

The transferring of her from the hospital bed to porters trolley, from trolley to CT unit scanning bed and then back onto the porters trolley and back into the hospital bed on the ward was extremely painful , but there was no consideration of this by the hospital staff. The staff in question where more concerned with how busy there were including the porter.

Lack of information regarding her own Medication.

Despite the fact my wife brought her own medication in the hospital and asked if she could continue taking it, there was no proper confirmation or otherwise if she could indeed continue to take whilst in hospital. It was only on the day of discharge when the pharmacist came round that she found out she could have continued taking whilst in hospital.
