Having had T1D for 35 years I've gotten to know a few different NHS trusts level of care for Diabetes, some excellent, some not so good. I moved to Oxfordshire recently so have been referred to OCDEM for my diabetes care. My first visit was not good for the following reasons: 1) I was not seen by a consultant which I understand to be normal for a 'get to know' first visit; 2) I was not tested for ketoacidosis (DKA) which is unthinkable; 3) my height was not taken so my BMI couldn't be calculated; 4) the registrar I was seen by didn't give accurate information about insulin onset and duration for NovoRapid (this you would think would be a core competency for a specialist diabetes registrar); 5) the registrar seemed completely uninterested in the management of my diabetes and seemed to only be concerned about ending the consultation quickly; 6) I was not offered any follow ups with a dietitian or dietary advice. Overall a very poor service by the registrar, and frankly many of the guidelines recommended for diabetes treatment by NICE were simply not followed. The one positive aspect was the treatment I received by the nurses who were a pleasure to work with, being professional, understanding and courteous. I will be following this review up with a formal complaint.
