"Poor facilities and care in A&E"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

We took my little girl who has been poorly for around 3 weeks now to a&e as we were becoming more and more worried about her as the day went on, we had to wait around 2 and a half hours to see a doctor which wouldn't have been a problem if we had been put in a bay with a trolley in it so that she had somewhere to lie down.

However the triage nurse left us in a bay with a plastic chair and pulled the curtains round. She was quite chilled out at first but then began to become increasingly distressed, I went to find someone to ask for water for her and to see about getting a trolley in the bay or going somewhere with one as she was restless being held and getting uncomfortably warm, her nappy also needed changed.

It took a while to track someone down and they said they would bring water, ask where we were on the list and get us a trolley. We never saw them again. After a while I went to ask again and we finally got some water.

By this point I had to put her blanket and my jacket on the floor to change her nappy, while I was doing this the doctor finally arrived. I have pictures of her lying on the floor and I really don't think this was acceptable. I understand there is a waiting time but she is a baby and I feel she was left too long with no one coming back to check that she was OK.

The doctor in a&e was really good I have to say and he referred us on to ward 15 which is the children's ward. The second complaint I have is to do with the attitude of 2 particular staff members. The nurse who dealt with us in the short stay area and a nursing assistant. I won't go into more detail here but I would like to make a formal complaint and show someone the pictures I have.

Dear Nicgh9

I am really disappointed that this was the experience you had when you brought your sick daughter to the RAH ED. This was obviously distressing for you and your family at what must have been a very worrying time.

If you would like to email me your contact details, I will ensure the Lead Nurse for the service contacts you.

Please accept my sincere apologies as this is not the standard of service we strive to deliver.

I can be contacted by email at Marie.Farrell@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

In the meantime I hope your daughter is well.

Best wishes

Jackie

Dear Nicgh9

Thank you for proving your contact details.

I have just had feedback from Gerry the Lead Nurse that you fully discussed your concerns with him and that you found the conversation with him extremely helpful.

If either Gerry or myself can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

I hope that your daughter is now fully recovered.

Regards

Update posted by Nicgh9 (a parent/guardian)

I definitely feel better after my conversation with Gerry this afternoon. He made sure I felt reassured that he would follow things up and that he was disappointed with the way we were treated.

Thank you for taking the time to chase things up.
