"All wards seem the same"

About: St Andrew's Healthcare Essex / Audley

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I am Audley. It seems like I have been here a long time. All wards seem the same wherever you are. I like to design and I am an obsessive compulsory designer. It is good here in its own way, but as I said, the buildings are the same wherever you go. I think there should be more privacy on the wards. I would like to design a ward. I have designed a ward before.. you know through patient involvement and surveys and things. Having a bit of freedom is important. I went on perimeter leave a few days ago which just means I was able to walk to a certain point, but I was in the car park and could see all the cars, This was actually amazing and meant so much to me as I love cars.

St Andrew’s suits me now and the staff treat me very nice, but the environment is too closed in.

Thank you for sharing your insights with us. It is an interesting point that you have made about the design of wards and your observations that they all look the same wherever you go. Additional I read with interest that you have previously been involved in designing a ward and that you would like to contribute in this area should there be an opportunity to do so.

Can I encourage you to raise your views with the staff. There are opportunities to participate in many areas and you can discuss your ideas with the staff, via your community meetings or participate in the service user groups meetings. Often we miss out on ideas from patients simply because we are not aware of the talent that you have, so please do keep talking and sharing your ideas.

Best wishes
