"My visit to the the glaucoma clinic. Excellent..."

About: Royal Bolton Hospital / Ophthalmology

I recently attended the glaucoma clinic at H2 first floor at the Royal Bolton Hospital. I was very anxious as my father went blind from glaucoma and to have been referred to the hospital myself as the same condition was suspected I was very worried. I was very surprised at the speed I was taken to the education room for a vision test and to have what would happen during my visit. The consultant who saw me first immediately put my mind at rest. We then went to an imaging suite where my eyes were scanned and photographs were taken. Then I was sent to a waiting room where another member of staff called me in after a few minutes to do a visual fields test. After that I was asked to take a seat in the waiting room where a doctor would call me next. On seeing the doctor I was asked some health questions and had my eyes examined and had my eye pressure checked with a blue light not a horrible puff of air. I then had some drops instilled to make my pupils dilate and was again asked to wait in the waiting room while the drops take effect. I was then called in again to the same doctor who examined my eyes again and was given a prescription for eye drops as it seems I have indeed inherited my fathers glaucoma. The doctor then asked we to wait in the waiting room and I was again called into the education room by the First consultant I saw who then talked to me about how to store my drops and how to instil them and the importance of using them at the same time every night. I was given lots of reassurance and information about my condition and was given a booklet about glaucoma and one about driving too as this was worrying me. I would like to pass on my thanks to all the staff that dealt with me on that day as I was a nervous wreck. Everyone was so reassuring and the education part at the end was excellent, learned things that I otherwise wouldn't have know and was able to ask questions without feeling like I was holding the doctor up. The consultant was very reassuring and I came away from my visit feeling very confident that although my condition can't be cured it can be managed and the staff seemed to do everything they could to ensure I came away fully informed on how to get the best out of my treatment and the importance of attending my follow up appointments to continue to monitor my condition. I can't complain about the service I received as from start to finish all the staff were very professional and the fact that I came away educated on how to use my treatment and with a greater understanding of my condition was just brilliant, I really feel the glaucoma staff really got that extra mile to provide the best possible care. No one knows if I will end up blind like my father did, but I feel that under the care of this team everything that can be done will be done to ensure that I don't lose my sight. Keep up the good work.
