"Admission to Cedar Ward Hull Women's and Childrens"

About: Hull Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology

After having major surgery of a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salphingo oopherectomy with right ovarian mass, I was admitted to be in overnight, the following day after removal of indwelling catheter, I was told that I could go home. As I was feeling generally unwell as the day progressed, the ward decided to keep me in for a further night. Unfortunately on a Friday the ward closes until Monday morning, I was wheeled round to the eye hospital for an available bed! Although I found the staff to be very caring and pleasant on this unit, I felt that I was in a bay, with a lady with surgical intervention on her leg, and a lady who had Alzheimer's, and this was not appropriate placement for someone who had just undergone major surgery, and I was in an area where the staff were not trained in the treatment of a gynaecological patient. I was informed on the Saturday morning, that someone from the team would come across to see me? I was discharged on the Saturday, with a prescription for a morphine based analgesic. I had requested something for my bowels, but was not given anything to take home. I was not offered any information of follow on things to do or not do, just to remove the dressing myself after 7 days. How can anyone without training know whether the dressing is ready to remove, and in fact know how to remove all the steri strips that were also across the wound. I must say that 3 months on now, I'm still not feeling that my abdomen belongs to me, and I think a lot of this is due to poor after care and not being able to talk through concerns that I have/had. The consultant was excellent, but obviously they were only interested in the surgical procedure and not anything to do with after care. My 8 week follow up was forgotten, and I finally got an appointment 13 weeks post surgery. I do think things need to be looked at as to how and why care and treatment is carried out at this hospital.
