"I was in for a kidney transplant ..."

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was in for a kidney transplant and I can honestly say that of all the hospitals I have been in (there have been a few) that this Renal Unit was the very best. I was seen by at least one, some times two, Consultant Transplant Surgeons and one or two Consultant Nephrologists every day I was in and this included weekends!!! They didn't not stand at the bottom of the bed and discuss me in a group, which has happened many times before, they would come and speak to me directly explaining the results of any tests and ensureing that I was feeling no pain. Which I never did at any time (I was in for 10 days). The humour and good naturedness of all the Surgeons, Doctors and Nurses helped all us patients feel relaxed and cared for. Even the cleaners and health care assistants were great. Everyone worked together to ensure the unit ran efficiently. Aftercare in the Renal Outpatients has also been fantastic, it's like being a part of a big family, friends I made at the time will all say similar things. We are all so grateful!

I am going in again soon to have another op, back with the same Surgeons, so already I feel relaxed and safe!

Also my grateful thanks go to the Theatre staff, Anaesthetists, ODP's and Health Care Assistants, for being just great!

Ps The Food was good too!

What could be improved

A higher staffing level of Nurses, especially at night, if they were having to do Dialysis on patients. This would involve one or two specialist staff nurses, leaving one or sometime none for patient care!!!

Anything else?

I'd go back for every op or procedure I ever needed in the future if they'd let me!
