"Whitechapel walk-in : misdiagnosed"

About: Whitechapel Walk-in Centre

(as the patient),

I had been suffering with really bad back pain for a couple of days, only to find myself unable to sit, stand, walk or lie with what appeared to be symptoms of haemmoroids. As I was unable to get an appointment with my GP at such a short notice I decided to go to the Whitechapel Walk-in clinic which is luckily open until after 10pm. After 2 1/2 hours of waiting time in which I was unable to sit down and was shaking,I was seen by the GP on duty who diagnosed haemorrhoids, gave me painkillers and sent me home to make an appointment with my GP the next day.

8 sleepless hours later with high feaver I was lucky enough to find a local private specialist who could see me within half an hour from calling. The diagnosis changed my life completely: large abscess caused by a fistula which had to be operated straigth away. Thanks to my credit card I was able to be admitted straight away, have the surgery 3 hours later and go home the next day. My life is still affected by this as I had to completely change my life around and I will also have to go back under the knife again in 2 weeks time to remove the fistula. Again, this will mean at least 10 days off work for the second time around and pain.

I am disappointed, as I believe I could have been diagnosed earlier and not only avoid endless hours of excruciating pain but also avoid having to take up a loan to repay the private medical care. I think all it would have taken is a correct diagnosis...
