"A&E and gynecology"

About: Queen's Hospital / Accident & emergency

In June, I ended up at Queens A&E due to excessive bleeding. After waiting 6 hours, while still heavily bleeding, I was then seen by a doctor who told me to take some tablets and go home. I had already taken these tablets previously from my GP. My partner insisted that the doctor asked someone elses opinon on this and before I knew it I was admitted to the gynecology ward. The A&E department did not take my condition seriously, even though I was heavily bleeding in the waiting room, they still wanted to send me home. Thankfully, my partner insisted and the new doctor agreed I should be sent to gynecology. I do not feel I was cared for properly in A&E. Once I was admitted to the ward, I felt so taken care of and the staff are a credit to Queens hospital, especially their student nurses who were amazing! I had a scan in the morning that showed the problem. If I was sent home, it would of got so much worse! I can not thank the gynecology team enough! As for the A&E team, I was shocked that they were going to send me home after I got my results from the tests! I was also shocked by how long I had to wait, especially when there were people in the waiting room telling the receptionist that they could go to their GP the next day if there was too much of a wait and they were still seen before me! Disgraceful!

I am sorry to read of your comments regarding your experience in Queen’s Hospital Emergency Department.

Unfortunately, we are not able to determine how many patients are going to access our emergency department each hour.

Patients come into the department in several ways and our doctors and nurses will see patients based on their clinical need and priority. However, I am sorry you didn’t receive the care we pride ourselves on.

If you would like to discuss your Emergency Department visit further, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01708 435 454 or by email pals@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk.

Thank you for your kind words for our Gynaecology Team, I will ensure that this is passed to the Divisional Nurse for her to share with her staff.

Yours Sincerely

Kathryn Halford

Chief Nurse
