"I can not believe how seamless the service was and how all staff on duty were organised and professional"

About: NHS 111 William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / Accident and emergency William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My 11month old baby daughter had chicken pox diagnosed at the GP Practice. No concerns however the next day some chicken pox spots went angry looking, we thought this was just regular chicken pox.

Within two hours one spot had turned purple and her temp started creeping up. Her temp was 37. 7c. I had given her calpol and rang the 111 service. When I saw a spot had turned purple I immediately thought the worse meningitis septicaemia. We checked again with the glass test and it didn't disappear. 111 service told is to take her to A&E.

As soon as we got to the William Harvey hospital we spoke with the receptionist who gave us an information form to fill out. Once we had completed that within the 5 minutes the nurse in charge was checking my baby and said it wasn't meningitis to our relief however it could be sepsis. Another nurse came out and said go into the children's A&E. we were seen immediately. The staff were efficient and supportive. The doctor checked her over and ordered bloods which were slightly raised and a chest x-ray which was clear so no signs of pneumonia. This was all completed within the hour.

The staff were exceptional. I can not believe how seamless the service was and how all staff on duty were organised and professional. Even when taking my daughters bloods they did this quickly! Anyone is amazing if they can take blood from a baby's vein. My daughter was monitored closely with her observations taking blood pressure, pulse (which was raised) resps, temp which had raised to 38. 8 within half an hour and sats regularly.

My daughter was taken to Padua for monitoring and antibiotics. I cannot believe how quickly she deteriorated. Please if anyone has any concerns with their child regarding sepsis please take to A&E for close monitoring and treatment. Their little lives are so vulnerable. I cannot believe how quickly she deteriorated. I have a medical background so I know the signs of sepsis but for anyone who isn't sure. Please look at signs and symptoms and don't just leave it. My daughter has recovered well after a 3 day stay in hospital. So Thank you A&E at the William Harvey Hospital for being efficient, professional and highly skilled at your job. I would highly recommend other people using your service as it seems to be a safe environment.

What a really worrying time for you - I am so sorry that you had all this stress and anxiety initially.

However, it must have been very reassuring to have your baby so very thoroughly checked over and monitored and that all the staff worked well to stop your daughter's health deteriorating further.

Thank goodness the treatment was so promptly effective and that she recovered well during her brief stay at the William Harvey Hospital.

As you rightly say, it is a good reminder to any other parents who have concerns about sepsis to take prompt action - thank you for letting us know about your experience.

Our best wishes for a very quick full recovery.
