"No Compassion"

About: Ipswich Hospital / Gynaecology

I had an appointment with the Gynaecologist at ipswich hospital. From the moment I sat down in the chair the consultant didn't seem to be very interested in what I had to say. I've had on going issues for a long time. When I was young I was told to go on the contraceptive pill to help my painful, irregular periods (periods that would make me pass out or vomit). I came off the pill when I was 18/19 as it started to give me migraines. My periods although generally regular when on the pill were still quite painful, but not as bad. Within a short time of coming off the pill they went back to how they had been before I started. Now I've put on weight and this started when I went on the pill. (I'm not saying it's the only reason, but it seemed to be a contributing factor) now the doctors just say I need to loose weight. They are not willing to even consider other options or offer help with my weight loss. Something I've struggled with over the years and definitely not for lack of trying. It's so frustrating to have had a problem they gave me a temporary solution, which helped my weight gain and now say it's because I'm overweight. The consultant even called me fat during my consultation (they were far from empathetic) and needless to say this upset me. I have concerns over my fertility but they brushed this under the carpet as I'm not trying for a baby yet and showed no compassion as to why, being a woman, this may concern me. All they did was fob me off with blood tests. Now I guarantee if I were a smoker or a heavy drinker they would blame that. When I asked the question of. If I lose weight and it continues what then? They dodged the question and said we will see when you lose weight. Now I'm not saying I don't need to or want to, but what if the required is something wrong that isn't being looked into because they blame my weight? What then. Had the consultant been more understanding, more informative and a bit more delicate about the topic, it would have been easier to be more understanding. But being called fat was way out of line!

I am very sorry to hear of your experience on this occasion. It would be really helpful to us if you would give more details so that the matter can be investigated and the doctor concerned made aware of how they made you feel.

This can be done either by contacting Heather Arkle, Operational Manager for Women’s Services on 01473 703295 or via our PALS team on 01473 704781 – your feedback is really important to us and we would like the opportunity to look into your concerns further. If you would prefer to remain anonymous in this process PALS may be the better option for you as they can take details of who you saw in clinic and pass them on without identifying you.
