"I accompanied my elderly mum to ..."

About: St Albans City Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I accompanied my elderly mum to her cataract surgery in opthamology day surgery. She was very well taken care off during what she found to be an unpleasant procedure. The nursing staff were very kind to her although I was asked to wait outside the ward which was disappointing as she needed me to help her walk to & from the toilet etc. She was very anxious during the procedure & had a painful injection at the side of her eye. She found the surgeon a bit impatient with her as she tried to follow his instructions to keep her eye still. It has left her somewhat 'shell-shocked' although she is now fine, though rather exhausted. The eye looks very good & we are hoping for her sight to be improved. The nursing staff who discharged her were very reassuring & explained clearly the use of drops & what to expect after the procedure.

What could be improved

Perhaps a little more patience with an old lady & reassurance from the surgeon.

Anything else?

The process was very efficient in terms of timing. I was happy with my mum's care, though I would have liked to sit with her before the op as she was very nervous & would have liked me to assist her.
