"Treatment of our 10 year old son following head trauma"

About: Royal Surrey County Hospital / Neurology St George's Hospital (Tooting) / Neurology

(as a relative),

Our son was referred to St George's neurology team, following a serious accident at school in which he received a complicated and dangerous fracture to his skull. We cannot praise the surgical skill of Dr Martin enough, nor the care of the Ocean Ward team, in managing his treatment and he is now on the way to recovery.

In addition to the medical skill and pastoral care that we observed, we were also struck by the slick processes and efficiencies of the whole operation. At a time when budgets are surely under scrutiny, it was reassuring to see an organisation in which documents, scans and files and personal information was passed seemlessly from one department to another (neurology, maxiofacial, MRI, children's ward etc) and we had a real sense that our son was being treated by a single team, with a single objective, which is incredibly reassuring under such stressful circumstances.

We would like to thank Dr Martin and his team and recommend that other parts of the NHS (for example other neurology departments) learn from and build upon their excellent approach.
