"Can't fault the nurses, very disappointing..."

About: Cumberland Infirmary

I was admitted to hospital after a fall from my horse the a&e department were extremely helpful and kept my family up to date with what was happening as I was not quite alert. Unfortunately due to my injuries several fractures and a punctured lung resulting in me needing a chest drain the ward I was apparently meant to be on did not have space so was placed in a ward that had not dealt with a chest drain before never mind the fractures I suffered however the nurses were absolutely brilliant I was moved around 3 wards in the week I was there and on each ward I could not fault the care the nurses gave me. Unfortunately the doctors dealing with my fractures were very dismissive of me and I have been out of hospital now for nearly 3 weeks and I have had no follow up appointments. When my gp phoned to see when I was to return they informed him that they had discharged me and had expected me to attend my local hospital for further follow ups, should this not have been relayed to me and should I not have been referred to another hospital if this is the case. My other hospital is over an hour away from me where as carlisle is 30 minutes. I feel extremely let down by the doctors that have dealt with me during this time. I have had not follow ups for either my fractures or my lung I am very disappointed and feel slightly discriminated against because my address is not a cumbria postcode. However I would like to thank the lovely nurses that did their best to find out information for me and cared for me even though my injuries were not what they were used to dealing with thank you to them.

Dear L Heppell

Thank you for taking the time to contact the Cumberland Infirmary via NHS Choices about your recent admission.

I totally understand that this experience has left you feeling very frustrated and upset.

The lack of information re follow-up from your injuries is not the standard of care we normally provide. Our aim is to provide a high standard of care to all of our patients whether they have a Cumbria postcode or not.

Your concerns do warrant further investigation but you have not provided us with enough information to investigate what happened on the discharge plan.

If you are unhappy with the care or treatment that you received then you have the right to complain.

The PALS team (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) can help you through this process or put you in touch with the senior staff members who may be able to discuss your concerns with you.

They can be contacted on

• 01228 814008 between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday,

I do hope that you are now recovering from the injuries sustained from the fall from your horse. I cannot imagine that your recovery was easy.

I will forward your comments to the Matrons for the areas you have mentioned so that your thanks to the nursing staff is passed on.

With our best regards,

Alison S-D
