First of all I'd like to say that I visited PRH far more frequently than I'd have liked to last year and received nothing but first class treatment, and had the standards been maintained I would not consider giving the hospital a low rating now. I just had the 'pleasure' of visiting PRH AMU after being referred by Shropdoc for an overnight fever/tachycardia a few days after cellulitis treatment, and was surprised to see how significantly the service has been downgraded since my last visit in Nov 2015. Was seen more or less straight away by the Sister who quickly took bloods/obs etc, then waited 2 hours to see a doctor - a thoroughly nice person, but this is where the problem starts. In the good old days AMU had a rotation of GP's on ward, so clinical decisions were made quickly and efficiently even if you were initially seen by a doctor that wasn't in a position to make the decision. Sadly this is no longer the case, hospital management (in a characteristic stroke of genius) have completely dispensed with clinician cover, so you are now effectively just 'triaged' by someone with no authority to provide treatment. As a result, I sat around for a further 3 hours until a consultant (the one and only clinician in the whole hospital, I assume) finally arrived, and I was then quickly dismissed with their thought that despite me having struggled with high temperatures etc for the duration of my 13 day antibiotic course, this new fever was obviously just a coincidental (albeit completely asymptomatic) flu/strep type infection, completely unrelated to my original condition (and conveniently needing no further treatment). All credit to them, they did recommend that if they were wrong then I should go to my GP rather than going back there...but seriously, does anyone go back to AMU these days? Whilst this is obviously a complaint about the way in which a once useful service for non-emergency treatments has been effectively destroyed by management incompetence, I have to make it clear that the medical staff in the AMU are as professional, friendly and courteous as they ever were - they're just working against even worse conditions than they used to because management have not the slightest interest in patient care. Perhaps the pointless waiting times to be assessed by a 'real' doctor are related in some way to the exorbitant incremental rises in parking charges as the wasted hours clock up...hmm, I wonder?
"AMU - be aware, this is no longer a true..."
