"Stent removal"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

8 weeks ago I had a ruptured kidney through kidney stones. A stent was put in so the kidney could repair it self. Discharged with information telling me and also the consultant saying the same thing that they would see me in 2 weeks and a further 2 weeks to have the stent removed. Unfortunately that didn't happen, my next appointment was for 4 weeks to which time my stent would of been in for 8 weeks. Ok, no problem as my appointment was to have the stent removed. Unfortunately that didn't happen. There wasn't and isn't anything wrong with my kidney other then infection off this stent because obviously it shouldn't be there now. The consultant who said we will remove it under a general, fine by me I thought. The consultant told me I will see you in 4/6 weeks. Ive waited 4 weeks with no appointment in sight. I phoned the appointments, to be told I'm sorry but you are probably having the procedure in January. I was horrified as the longer the stent is in the more problems it can cause especially as I don't need it and it should of been removed. They didn't even know who I was so I'm thinking my name was never on the op list. My stent would be in for 4 months and that is if they actually do it. It is absolutely outrageous that because of a consultant been on holiday and study leave that patients are left at risk. Ive been in pain and discomfort since having this in and do not have a normal life because of it. I told the consultant this. What should I do ????

Margaret, we are very concerned by the quality of care you have described. This is of course not the kind of experience we would expect for any patient, and we are anxious to speak to you and rectify the situation. Our hospital Help and Advice Service exists so that we can speak with you personally and that any issues you raise can be investigated. I would urge you to get in touch through the details below.
