"On the whole nursing staff were ..."

About: Wansbeck Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

On the whole nursing staff were kind - but not kept up to speed on what was needed.

What could be improved

My granddaughter was admitted at at approx. 5pm on 4 May with suspected appenditis - in considerable pain and very frightened as she had not had to stay in hospital before. She was examined and then had 2 drips fitted and told she would be operated the following morning so nil by mouth. Her mother hurried in to see her next morning before the 'operation'. She found her daughter very distressed as she was nervous of the drips and had not slept at all. When we visited at 2.30p m, nothing had been done and no one had advised my granddaughter what was happening.A nurse came whilst we were there and asked if she could 'pack her own things or would she need help. We did not know what was going on and neither did she! My granddaughter was advised that she would be taken for scans some time that day. She was very hungry and thirsty by this time. She was then moved to an orthopedic ward - staff had no idea why she had been moved and knew nothing of her history. We left her when visiting was over, very distressed. The drips were removed apparently but then doctor visited and said they should not have been removed. 15 mins after we left the hospital my grandaughter rang her mother to say she was to be discharged immediately!! What a shambles! 1 week later her discharge letter was received - illegible notes - so still no proper examination or diagnosis!

Anything else?

Today she has had to go back to the doctors - an emergency appointment - with exactly the same symptoms! However, she will certainly NOT be returning to Wansbeck for their 'care'.
