What I liked

My daughter received excellent care & treatment on the children's ward. We were kept well informed and able to be by her side throughout her stay, which was important to us and her.

What could be improved

Full introduction (name, position & speciality) from all doctors & consultants and better communication between them. This would hopefully ensure we not only understood the reason for a new face (change of shift, different speciality, etc) but prevent us having to repeat the history, symptoms, progress.

Anything else?

I do not agree with the tv / media system-not only is it extortionate, but using headphones is not sterile. I think free, or low cost, tv & radio entertainment should be provided for inpatients. In my opinion this media contract is an example of the division between nhs management & care.

Thank you for your positive feedback about your daughter’s care and treatment. We are both sorry and disappointed that staff did not introduce themselves and that communication between staff could have been better. All staff are required to attend mandatory training which includes improving on Customer Care & Communication skills in general.

The NHS Plan stipulated that by the end of 2004 bedside televisions and telephones would be available in all major hospitals. The plan also stated that costs to implement run and maintain the bedside TV would not come from NHS funds but from a service provider who would also decide on the costs.

As a Trust we are committed to ensure that we are providing value for money for our patients and we can confirm that the charges made to our patients for the bedside TV are comparable to the rest of the country.
