"Poor experience visiting Lindsay Ward"

About: Biggart Hospital

(as a friend),

Whilst visiting an elderly friend, he buzzed to inform staff the new man across the room was up on his feet clearly at risk of falling. The nursing assistant who came told him it was fine he was allowed up but when he persisted saying he looked like he was going to fall they said said he could walk with 1 of the Taurus frame so was fine to be up on his own - clearly not. They then proceeded to pull the curtains around the man so the nosy other patients and visitors could not see as they walked away leaving him sat on the edge of his bed only for him to get up and unsteadily attempt to open them again.

We attempt to visit again another day at 1745 this time as protected meal time is clearly marked at finishing at 1730. On ringing the buzzer it was clear the staff were busy and not at the nurses station no problem to wait. Eventually a nursing assistant comes out of a room to collect something obviously busy as wearing their PPE (apron and gloves) looks clearly sees us waiting and goes back in with no acknowledgement we are there. On leaving the room again still wearing the PPE they went into another room, comes back out again a few moments later and walked up the ward to the locked door where we are at and proceeded to use the key pad to unlock the door still wearing the blue gloves. We are then abruptly told we cannot get in as they are about to put all the men to bed so we will need to go somewhere and wait.

Absolutely the patients should be given their dignity whilst being "put to bed" but at the same time there is no need for visitors to be confronted by this hostile attitude.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Disappointed21,

I can agree, this is very disappointing and I am sorry that this has been your experience. Not only that, the poor man could clearly have had a fall and that must be the last thing we want.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran have made Customer Care Commitments to all patients and public, visitors etc. and one of those commitments is to a respectfully acknowledge visitors (and a smile could go a long way too).

You raised a few different, valid points here, which I will pass to the appropriate management for their reflection and actions.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about this,

best wishes,

Eunice
