"Very frustrated with service"

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / Ophthalmology

I have type 1 diabetes and glaucoma and have been attending Ophthalmology twice a year for several years, also having a field vision test prior to my appointment. I have been prescribed different eye drops for both eyes to use twioce daily for many years, which have to be preservative free.

After my check up on 4th September 2015 I was told I would be sent an appointment for 6 months time.

After almost a year no appointment materialised, so after phoning I was given one for Friday 7th October this year - over 1 year later, but no mention of a field vision test.

Arriving at 10am for my 10.10 appointment I was seen by a young assistant after waiting 25 minutes, and eventually seen by the consultant 1 hour and 20 minutes after arriving, with no explanation.

After eye examination the consultant told me my pressures were up and would prescribe new stronger eye drops; also that I would be sent an appointment for 4 - 6 months time.

I used the new eye drops that night and next morning and had a severe allergic reaction with swollen eyes, watering, and discolouration.

Obviously the consultant had not read my notes that I should have preservative free drops.

By the next morning (Sunday) they looked in a really bad state, and were a great discomfort, so I went to Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone A & E, saw a very helpful nurse who recommended I take anti-histamine and phone WHH the next morning and see the consultant again. After speaking with the consultant's secretary on Monday 10th and explaining my predicament they promised they would phone back within 4 days.

Tuesday 18th I phoned again and this time it was an answerphone so left all my details, and explained that I obviously needed stronger eye drops, so what should I do?

I repeated these phone calls on Fdriday 21st; Friday 28th, Wednesday 2nd November, speaking to an answerphone each time and leaving my details, and to date I have not had the courtesy of even an acknowledgement.

So I feel very frustrated, and just like a mushroom - kept in the dark!

I am so sorry to learn about the problems you have been experiencing - from the delays in getting an appointment, the delays during the appointment and then the allergic reaction you had to the drops.

I am very sorry that the consultant had not noted that you should have preservative free drops.

If you still haven't heard from the department about your drops, please will you ring PALS (the Patient Advice and Liaison Service) on either 01227 783145 or 01227 864314 and they will do their very best to help you.

Again, you may well get an answerphone, but so long as you leave a message with your telephone number they will guarantee to get back to you as soon as they can. I hope that your eyes feel very much more comfortable as soon as possible.
