"awful maternity care"

About: William Harvey Hospital / Maternity

Several members of staff failed to identify that my baby had passed away during pregnancy whilst I was an inpatient over night. A midwife noted they could not hear my baby's heartbeat or 'the source' aka the placenta! Multiple members of staff documented that I urgently needed a scan but i was discharged without one. My blood results were completely missed, twice, which clearly highlighted one of my levels was significantly raised and was a clear indicator my baby had died but despite all this I was discharged the next day. Staff tried to make decisions for me as to what my options were in relation to 'expelling' my baby - despite what I had clearly advised I wanted, they tried to back me into a corner several times taking no regard for my preferences. Complete lack of communication all round, in different departments - dragging out such a horrific ordeal for me. 2 months down the line I'm still dealing with their incompetencies.

From what you tell us here, you have had a dreadful experience, and I am just so sorry about this.

We need to look into this so in the first place, please ring PALS, the Patient Advice and Liaison Service.

PALS can be contacted by ringing 01227 783145 or 01227 864314 or by email at ekh-tr.PALS@nhs.net.

If you get the answerphone, it will be because the team is currently dealing with other calls, so please leave a message so that a PALS officer can ring you back - which they will do as soon as possible.

They will take your details and discuss with you how we can deal with your complaint.
