Daughter had surgery to have kidney stone removed and insertion of stent . Nil by mouth from midnight . Had phone call mid afternoon , upset about lack of pain relief . I collected my daughter from unit at 6.30 that evening . Had asked staff for hot drink , did not receive this or even snack . Due to the surgery performed surely drinking is a basic need to aid recovery . No aftercare instructions or explanation of the type of pain she may suffer , and did . Five days later attended to have removal of stent . This was removed but to my understanding and research I thought the use of a numbing gel should have been used . Again no information on what to expect . Within half an hour in excruciating pain . Within 3 hours of having stent removed went to local urgent care . Daughter refusing to suffer the long drive back to Sunderland . GP very helpful gave suppositories for pain and antibiotics . Urinalysis test at urgent care showed signs of potential urinary infection. Please could you explain to your patients what to expect information leaflets or little chat on discharge would help.
