I was booked in to emergency gynae after discovering a missed miscarriage at a private clinic, and was pleased to be able to choose surgical management again (third time, and I've had two other types of op here). Consultants, doctors and nurses alike have always been extremely kind, and the wards, surgery areas and consulting areas are clean and tidy. I was concerned at my last visit that the emergency gynae registrar was also covering the general A&E gynae (in a different building) so kept stopping my consultation to reply to their pager and give advice on other patients. They were apologetic about it, calm and kind. I did feel that they were focussed on me at the moments when they were dealing with me. However, at a time of distress and vulnerability to have the doctor interrupting your consultation makes you feel like you're not the important thing of the moment. I'm torn between thinking we're so fortunate to have the NHS at all, and also thinking this kind of experience shows it is struggling to keep its head above water. Presumably it is a function of everyone being overworked - how it could be fixed? More investment in the NHS, presumably. Well, in any case, I wanted to review here to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who looked after me at St Mary's a few weeks ago.
