"Delayed pathology results following breast cancer surgery"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

Following recent surgery I was given appointment to receive results of lumpectomy and lymph gland removal for 10 days time. That wait was horrific enough, and then on the day before they were due I received a call to say results were delayed and I would have to wait another week. Reason apparently was lack of staff in the labs. Is there anything you can do please to reassure me that I will have these results on time. I am not sure I can cope very well with any more of a wait for something as serious as this. As you can imagine this wait is very distressing.

I am aware of staffing and resource pressures but in situations that are as time sensitive as this I think the service could respond much more quickly.

I would very much appreciate your attention to this.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear CK2016,

Having spent a great deal of my adult life working in cancer services, I witnessed many people awaiting results and while I do not know how you must feel, I think I can appreciate how awful it must be. I could go into explanations about how this may have come about but really, in the end, this will not serve any purpose nor alleviate your pressure and concerns at this point.

I am really sorry you are in this place right now and I hear your distress and desperation. If you can contact me tomorrow I will try to establish the details around this. Hopefully I will be a place to reassure you that your results will be available in the time scale you have been told.

My contact details are: 01563 826222 or email Eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

Sincerely,

Eunice
