"Out of hours appointment"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

I am 16 weeks pregnant and yesterday had been ill all day to the point where by 8pm at night i hadnt been able to even keep water down, i had taken some medication that had been prescribed to me just the day before and after reading the info on them i noticed that it may well have had somthing to do with them. Rang helpline who reffered me to north tyneside got there it was a trainee doctor who literally seemed totally un-interested and not understanding my issues and that i was worried due to my vomit being like acid and not even keeping smallest amount of water down. They took my blood pressure checked the inside of my mouth like literally for a second without even getting close to me and then sat and looked at me blankley and asked me what i wanted from this? Are they for real? I wanted to know if the baby had been affected or if the baby was even ok. Got nowhere and left even my husband said it was an awkward situation as at one point the four of us sat there in silence just looking at each other! Home now and still anxious and worried

Dear Madam,

Thank you for your review – firstly can I apologise for any delay in responding to it. I understand NHS choices are having some difficulty with their system and as such we are not being notified about reviews at the time. I know they are working on this and hope to have the problem resolved soon.

Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. I am really sorry that staff in our urgent care centre didn’t do more to make you feel listened to and supported at a time when you were worried about the health of your baby.

It is obviously concerning to learn that you were just stared at blankly without getting the answers you needed. I can imagine this only added to the stress you and your husband were feeling at the time and I’m sorry.

Often when doctors ask “ what do you want to get out of this ? ” it is a way of ensuring that they bring the patient into the conversation and take the time to understand what is personal and important to them. I am sorry that this approach wasn’t used in this way for you and that instead you felt your concerns were dismissed.

I can’t do more to follow this up unfortunately given the anonymous nature of your review. Please could you provide your details to patient.experience@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk should you wish me to look into this further.

I note that you are still worried and want you to get the reassurance you need and answers to some of the questions you may still have. My hope is that your community midwife should be able to help you, but please come back to me if this is not the case.

Kind Regards,

Jessica
