"Stunned at the lack of empathy in such a distressing time"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as the patient),

I called Abroath maternity unit just over a week ago as I was pregnant and I had started bleeding. The staff member who I spoke to didn't ask me many questions, never asked if I was in pain and proceeded to tell me to "put a sanitary towel on & take a pregnancy test in two weeks" I was understandably upset and she must of realised that from the phone call.

I couldn't believe her unprofessionally uncaring matter of fact attitude was and I was completely stunned at her lack of empathy in such a distressing time. For all she knew I could of been going though an ectopic pregnancy but she never asked any relevant questions to establish my symptoms.

In the end I unfortunately had a miscarriage on Wednesday. I know they couldn't of done anything but the next time it could be more serious & someone may lose more than there baby next time, which is heart breaking enough.

I'll never ever use Arbroath maternity unit again, if I'm lucky enough to have a baby, I believe my life could of been at risk because of the lack of interest in my terrible situation.  I thought this was a disgusting attitude from a professional, I was in floods of tears and she was rude blunt and very uncaring.

Dear “Beansmum”

I am very sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience when contacting the Arbroath Maternity Unit and that you sadly had a miscarriage. We work so hard across Angus to provide compassionate care and, on this occasion, clearly we have failed. I have discussed your experience with staff at our weekly team meeting and will also use your feedback to inform sessions on telephone communication, to ensure that no other women feel as you did after contacting our service.

I very much hope that your experience to date will not stop you from accessing our service, and that we will be given the opportunity to care for you in future.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with me via Patient Opinion. Should you wish to provide further detail to enable me to investigate more fully, please contact Alison Moss, Complaints and Feedback Team Lead on 0800 027 5507 (freephone) or via email to feedback.tayside@nhs.net

Kind regards

Iona Duckett, Midwifery Team Leader Angus
