What I liked

This Hospital has a very poor MAU. My father was admitted to this unit twice in January 2010. The first time he was left waiting for a bed for over 5 hrs. He was very ill with Cancer related problems. The staff never got to grips with the fact that as relatives we were fully aware that my father had a limited level of survivability. They failed to respect my father and his wishes they also took very little notice of us as relatives.

During the admission process to a ward we were not kept informed . Whilst on the ward my father fell when he should have had a higher level of supervision. He was then hastily discharged to home, into community care. Community carers were very good and very understanding but all said he was in no condition to be released.

A week later the GP requested he was admitted again .He was collected by Ambulance and when he arrived at MAU i received a phone call from a doctor in MAU asking why he had been admitted.Fortunatly I have a little medical knowledge and was aware of what was needed and why he had been admitted.

Eventually put on to Ward where he received the correct paliative care and ended his days with dignity. Very Very poor MAU procedures and systems .Not to be recommended.

What could be improved

Every aspect of MAU needs revision.

Patients needs not recognised or respected.

Patient possesions need more care( Lost Teeth and hearing aids when admitted to first ward.

When enquiries were made no records held and nobody wanted to know. Staff did not care

My mother was admitted to Accident and emergency 2 weeks after my fathers death. She is aged 83 and was sent home still feeling unwell and vulnerable to an empty house in a taxi at 02.00a.m. Fortunately, the taxi driver showed more care for her welfare than the doctors and Nurses.

As relatives we were never informed of any of this. Very poor.

Care in Kings Lynn was so poor we have moved my mother to another are where care happens.

Anything else?

Ward care acceptable when eventually placed according to his needs.
