I had my first midwife app in September. I had a miscarriage earlier this year after I contracted flu. So naturally I was especially anxious to know when I could have my flu vac. The midwife told me, it would be at 28 weeks. I asked if they confused that with the whooping cough vac. No, they said, both were at 28 weeks. I found it strange to get the flu vac at the end of the winter, so I double checked with the consultant a week later. Turns out it is at 12 weeks, and I had it done beginning of October (instead of the end of January). The midwife also asked me if I'm drinking enough milk for the calcium. I said yes, lots, as I was craving milk at the time. Drink more, they advised me (without asking how much i actually drunk). I followed the advise, having a large glass of milk now with every meal. I was told at my next visit that my iron levels were low, I was very surprised as I'm a keen meat eater, so I started reading up about how to increase my iron levels. Turns out, one shouldn't have dairy with iron rich foods as it stops the absorption of iron. I think those are basic things for someone of the profession to know, and potentionally detrimental if the wrong advise is given. This midwife also couldn't answer some other questions I had, but they knew who to ask and i got my answers, so I won't hold it against them. I've met competent midwives since, but i am very worried to meet this midwife again when I'm in labour. I would absolutely panic.
