I was admitted as an emergency via A&E and brantham ward, then surgery. Absolutely everyone, from the moment I arrived at A&E, to the staff on Brantham, through to the theatre team were brilliant.
Admitted to SAU post surgery, and again, excellent care despite it being very busy. I had an excellent consultant who really took her time with me, the junior doctors were respectful and ensured I made informed decisions regarding my care, the housekeepers were cheerful and friendly, and the nursing staff were all great, other than one agency nurse that falsified my obs chart (wrote o2 saturation as 96%, when in fact it was a very dangerous 86%). I informed another nurse who retook the obs, then immediately called a doctor and I was given oxygen therapy for the next 12 hours. There was also a nurse who's name I don't know as they failed to introduce themselves. this nurse informed me (on Saturday) that they were tired, as he had just come back from a trip abroad. I thought they were rude, uncaring, and unempathetic. The nurse took blood from me, and inserted the needle at the wrong angle, and very firmly, resulting in unnecessary pain and excessive bruising. I was made to feel I was wasting their time, and at the end of his shift as I saw them leaving the ward, I smiled and said goodbye, and they walked past completely ignoring me.
I am a registered midwife, which is the only way I knew about the falsification of the observations, and the incorrect method of venepuncture. I don't know what to suggest for the falsification of the observations by the agency nurse, but after speaking to a staff nurse I at least expected an incident report form to be submit, which it wasn't. Sats of 86% in a young, healthy post op patient are extremely abnormal, and if this is usual behaviour for the nurse, then that is putting every patient they come into contact with at very real risk of harm.
Other than those two blips over 4 days, I have nothing but gratitude and thanks for the care received, and the kindness of the staff.
