"Treatment in sage"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I had a spinal decompression with pedical screws and rods. I am a quiet person and not demanding attention, this went against me I had the worse patient imaginable next to me. I was very poorly, my Asthma was bad as I had not been able to take spray night of operation so day 1 was bad with effects of that 2nd day.  I could not pass urine and was in great discomfort, then I had trouble with my bowels with impacted faeces, then because of the patient in next bed demanding so much attention was mainly left to my own devices. I strained my ankle trying to dig in my heels to raise myself up in bed that was very painful too.

The patient next to me used to swear and shout at the staff also threatened me, even if I just tutted at their behavior. One night, I was very cold shivering. a couple of nurses came by I called out to them I was very cold. I was in a spot with windows behind to the sides and facing open ward doors 1 nurse said we are all cold they had jackets on I said are you cold in bed at home I have chronic Asthma and bronchiectasis ok be it on your head if I get pneumonia.

Dirty incontinence pads was left in toilets by the patient next to me and remained there for long periods

My daughter saw how distressed I was because of being last to get any form of attention she phoned and was told they was too busy to have a conversation with her.

Took 3 days to arrange a scan on my leg although I was ready to go home no communication or professionalism, some of the nurses were very nice, others staff the let down the good work of the compassionate nurses.

I am very grateful to be able to have this operation and  some of the staff are the best - competent polite and respectful.   Shame Sage Ward was not the same. I would dread going back there.
