"Delay in ambulance"

About: South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a relative),

I wrote yesterday about the delay that my brother had in receiving emergency treatment. He fell from a ladder and hit his head, then got in his car but could not get out of the car because he was unable to move his leg. He called for help at 445pm, the paramedic arrived at 7pm, the ambulance arrived to take him to Gloucester hospital at 10pm! It seems that he has not broken his leg but he cannot weight bear or rotate the leg, so he is still under investigation. Imagine if he had serious injuries, a bleed on the brain or a fractured pelvis, in my opinion, the delay is absolutely dreadful. He was told that had his injury been life threatening the ambulance would arrive in 8 mins, a 2 hour + wait to be assessed is unbelievable!

Dear Wokbud,

Thank you for taking the time to provide our service with feedback. I hope your brother is feeling better.

I am sorry there was a delay in an ambulance reaching your brother. Our service has been experiencing a significant demand on our resources recently and this has stretched all our resources.

The detail you have provided here has been anonymised so I am unable to locate the details of the 999 calls you have made, so I cannot directly comment on the event.

However, we would welcome the opportunity to look into the care provided to you and your brother; if you would like us to do this may I ask you to contact our Patient Experience Team on either swast.patientexperience@nhs.uk or 01392 261 585 and a member of the team will be able to provide information on the next steps.

Thank you, again, for taking the time to share your story with us.

Sara
