"Mental health admission"

About: Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the Meadow Brook unit in Salford voluntary but I soon wanted to leave the unit because I felt there was a hostile ward environment by some of the Nursing staff. I was visited by a friend on the ward and at staff change over time we swapped places. After several hours had passed staff on the ward were advised by the police that we had swapped places so I returned to the ward.

The following day I was placed on a section 5. 1 as my nearest relative blocked the application for a section 3. After the section 5. 1 expired I was no longer sectioned I asked to leave the unit which was refused and 2 hours later I was placed on another section 5. 1. I felt a lot of the staff showed anger and frustration towards me and acted in a very unprofessional manner and my basic human rights were not respected. Being sectioned on a secure mental health ward at the meadow brook unit felt like being in prison so you rely on the staff for basic things like your daily allowance of tea and coffee and also letting you out of the secure doors of the ward for meal times. This caused severe anxiety having to ask the staff to do anything as they made me feel inferior and I felt they were annoyed I was bothering them. Some of the nursing staff would speak harshly towards service users and other members of staff were quite kind.

Dear Manchesterlad1979,

Thank you for sharing your experience of our Meadowbrook Unit on Patient Opinion. I am sorry to hear you have had a negative experience. I want to reassure you that we take such concerns very seriously.

The incident when you swapped places with your visitor was investigated at the time and we have changed our procedures to prevent this happening again. We have also changed the system of tea and coffee allowances to make this easier for patients.

We would like to talk to you about the other concerns you have raised. Please can you contact our Customer Care Team on Freephone 0800 587 4793 or email customercare@gmw.nhs.uk, so we can look into your complaint in more detail?

Please be assured that as a Trust, we take feedback very seriously as it provides us with an opportunity to improve the care and services we provide.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments and we do hope you get in touch.

Kind regards,

Tim McDougall
